Which diameter each service needs
Cores of 1"–3" cover water lines, conduit and anchors; 4"–8" solve drainage and cable trays; 10"–18" handle extraction and HVAC ducts; and up to 24" for manholes and heavy service runs. Set the diameter from the equipment data sheet, not by eye.
When scanning is mandatory
Always on post-tensioned slabs, on large-diameter cores, in moment zones or near supports, and whenever no reinforcement drawing exists. Cutting a post-tensioning strand is not a minor incident: it is a structural failure.
Diamond core or hammer drill
A hammer drill is fast and cheap for small diameters in non-structural work, but it leaves an irregular, microcracked hole. For structural anchoring, and for any medium or large diameter, a diamond bit is the only sensible option.
What the quote must include
Diameter and depth per hole, quantity, orientation (floor, wall or soffit), whether pre-scanning is included, how water is managed and who removes the extracted cores.
